SUPP ON THE ROAD TO WINNING ?
It has been a rough road for SUPP in Sarawak for the past one and a half years. What with the bad press of its President, and the relationship he enjoys with the current Sarawak Chief Minister that has been given much coverage in the opposition new media. The mainstream media have been trying hard to protect this party from the bad press it has received and www.kritis-online.com has taken it as a task to write about this political party and its relationship to the people in Sarawak.
Sarawak United Peoples’ Party or better known as SUPP was created to be part of the voice of the people here in Sarawak may eons ago, where its history and culture rich with multi races have given Sarawak is uniqueness here in Malaysia. Though only joining the Federation of Malaysia at a later date after independence, still no less important as part of the Federation, contributing in both GDP and GNP helping the economy of the country grow as a whole. In other words Kuala Lumpur can’t do without Sarawak, and vice versa.
Recently there was a claim from a senior Opposition Leader to give Sarawak autonomy which was seen as a test to the people’s support towards this opposition leader, whether to leave the Federation and become autonomous or keep with the status quo and bring the fight from within. It is in www.kritis-online.com opinion that the autonomy called makes no sense, as if it is given, even the Opposition has all to lose as they would lose control of this Federated state. So it comes to mind, was this autonomous call just a political ploy to cause unrest in this state, or a genuine request in the interest of the people ? There has been no official statement by this Opposition Leader, neither a concise plan on the transition to Autonomy, hence this statement holds no water and the people are encouraged to ask this leader in his twitter, what is his stand.
SUPP have been fighting vigorously on all fronts to strengthen its party and to strengthen the aims and peoples’ voice to be heard at Federal Level. How much has been translated into peoples renewed support? Can SUPP bring what it promises to greater heights and the voice of the people be heard ? There are many who claim that SUPP is a Chinese based party similar to its opposition DAP from Peninsular Malaysia who even though doesn’t claim, does look like a predominantly Chinese based party looking after their own interest. Those who claim this, believe that its just a handover from SUPP to DAP. Like Gerakan handing over to DAP in Penang. Is this the clever thing to do, is this the most intelligent thing to do ? The Chinese are well known for receiving higher education and being part of the intellectual society because of their push for education for their people. Hence the decision of its people has to be a smart and calculated decision.
The Opposition on the other hand are backed by a Businessman who grew their business’s under the SUPP management, yet have now turned their back on SUPP in support of DAP in words that they believe are the ‘smarter and brighter’ thing to do. Yes, they believe their business will thrive even further, and corruption will be reduced so that in turn will help make them more income than they already enjoy under the SUPP leadership ? Many ask, isn’t that enough ?
What is SUPP aims and objectives?..... naming a few :-
1) To establish by constitutional means a fair, just and equal society for all people irrespective of their racial origin or creed.
2) To secure and maintain the establishment of a Government based on parliamentary democracy.
3) To promote and ensure economic, educational and cultural advancement of all races and particularly to improve the economic condition of those who are economically backward.
4) To maintain, foster and promote goodwill, racial harmony and unity of all races and to inspire the people with the spirit of self-reliance and endeavour.
5) To promote and safeguard the interests Sarawak within the context of Malaysia.
6) To co-operate with other political organisations with similar aims and objectives on a Malaysian basis in joint political activities.
How about DAP ?
The vision of the party is to establish a peaceful and prosperous social democracy that can unite its disparate races and diverse religions and cultures based on:
a Malaysian Malaysia concept by forging Malaysian race with universal moral values,
offering equal access and opportunity
democractic governance and rule of law
creating wealth and distributing wealth equitably
and fighting against corruption.
Is there any real difference between these two party objectives ? Are you just going to vote out a party and vote in just the same ? The decision is the people’s and www.kritis-online.com will continue to write on SUPP and DAP, and we will bring you live interviews on both political party’s for the people to judge who they want to represent them. SUPP or DAP. The choice is yours. |
