BN under pressure to dismantle race-based policies as opposition draws more support from all sides, lifting popular vote above 50%.
History was supposed to have been made on May 5, the day Malaysians came out in record numbers to vote for a new government.
Some pundits predicted the country’s 13th general election — GE13 in the local shorthand — would be a defining moment that ended the grip on power by the Barisan Nasional (BN). Many were preparing for opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim to be ushered in as prime minister the next day....

AT FIRST sight, the general election in Malaysia on May 5th, the closest-fought since independence in 1957, looks encouraging. A lively campaign inspired a remarkable turnout of 85% of the country’s 13.3m voters. The government’s victory seems recognition of Malaysia’s solid economic performance and of the progressive reforms introduced by Najib Razak, the prime minister. He has repealed some oppressive, colonial-era laws. He has even begun to dismantle the affirmative-action policies favouring the ethnic-Malay majority over Chinese Malaysians (about a quarter of the population) and Indians (8%). Those policies are at the root of the corruption and cronyism poisoning Malaysian society....

Momokan perkauman sempit dan jahat UMNO-Barisan Nasional (BN) terhadap DAP ternyata bohong apabila tiga calon Melayu DAP memenangi kerusi Dewan Undangan Negeri (DUN) Mentakab dan Parlimen Raub, Pahang dan Bukit Bendera, Pulau Pinang pada Pilihan Raya Umum ke-13, semalam.
Tengku Zulpuri Shah Raja Puji memenangi DUN Mentakab apabila mendapat 7,882 undi menewaskan Chuah Boon Seng (MCA-BN) dengan majoriti 1,554 undi. Datuk Mohd Ariff Sabri Abdul Aziz pula memenangi kerusi Parlimen Raub dengan memperoleh 23,415 undi apabila menewaskan Datuk Hoh Khai Mun (MCA-BN) dengan meajoriti 2,814 undi....

KEPUTUSAN akhirnya BN - 133, Pakatan Rakyat, yang dianggotai DAP, PKR dan PAS, pula mengumpulkan 89 kerusi Parlimen - menambah tujuh kerusi berbanding lima tahun lalu.
Berikut ialah pemerhatian terhadap keputusan akhir tersebut:
1) Pakatan kehilangan Kedah. Ketiga-tiga negeri PR yang lain - Selangor, Penang and Kelantan - kesemuanya menang dengan majoriti lebih 2/3:
Selangor - Pakatan 44, BN 12
Penang - Pakatan 30, BN 10
Kelantan - Pakatan 33, BN 12
2) MCA hanya tinggal 6 kerusi parlimen (berbanding 15 pada 2008), sementara Gerakan hanya tinggal satu (berbanding 2 ). Kerusi tunggal Gerakan ialah Simpang Renggam di Johor, yang dipertahankan oleh Liang Teck Meng....

Kedah Barisan Nasional deputy chairman Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir will be sworn in as the Kedah Mentri Besar at Istana Anak Bukit here at 3pm Monday. Mukhriz said the Tengku Bendahara of Kedah, Tan Sri Tunku Annuar Sultan Badlishah, would receive the instrument of appointment from Prime Minister and Barisan chairman Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.
"The instrument of appointment is to officially inform that I have been appointed Kedah Mentri Besar and the new BN government in the state will honour all the promises made in the BN's election manifesto. "I think the promises made will take up our time in the next five years as we have listed so many activities and programmes for the people....
